Reviews

“Judith Silverthorne has written a well-researched novel for young readers”

“The Treasure Box is the fourth Judith Silverthorne novel I’ve read during my decades as a book reviewer, and again, this Regina-based writer has mesmerized me. … ‘This is extremely competent writing, and what’s more, it’s a story that’s hard to put down.’”

The relatable characters and vivid action combined with historical and contemporary social issues make The Treasure Box appealing to young readers and to their educators.

The Treasure Box

Twelve-year-old Gus is miserable after moving with his mom and sister to a smaller city following his parents’ divorce, struggling with a new school, being teased for his name, and watching his memory-waning grandfather resist a move to a seniors’ home. When a family-history assignment leads him to sift through his grandfather’s attic, he uncovers a small wooden box filled with artifacts that mysteriously transport him into the lives of his ancestors across various eras—through the Thirty Years’ War, the Great Frost of 1709, and World War II—experiencing their hardships and forced relocations firsthand. Alongside navigating contemporary issues like bullying and forming unlikely friendships, Gus learns that displacement, resilience, and connection run through his family’s past—and begin to shape his own future.
