Farming the stubborn prairie soil brings little more than poverty and heartbreak. But Peter carries a bold, improbable dream in his heart: he wants to make pottery. With no money, no formal training, and no local materials, everyone tells him it is impossible.
Conditions on the frontier are harsh. Neighbors think he has lost his mind as he scours swamps and ditches searching for natural clay. Working through bitter prairie winters, Peter constructs his own potter’s wheels from scrap machinery and builds crude wood-burning kilns out of fieldstones and mud.
Refusing to let poverty break him, Peter loads his horse-drawn wagon with handmade jugs, bowls, and crocks, traveling hundreds of miles across unpaved trails to sell his wares directly to fellow homesteaders.
